There were emotive scenes at the Vicente Calderón stadium, where 50,000 fans gave ex president Jesús Gil a hero's send off. They were unable to dedicate a victory to his memory however, falling 1-2 to Zaragoza thanks to two late goals from Toledo in injury time, and their place in the UEFA cup is now in jeopardy after dropping to eighth spot in the table.

The visitors were in a relaxed mood after Saturday's results confirmed they would be staying in the top flight, and consequently they decided to save themselves €160,000 by leaving on-loan midfielder Movilla out of the squad. But neither side really set the game alight, and they went in at the break without troubling the scorers.

Manzano brought on Gabi and Nikolaidis at the break, and it was the Greek striker who broke the equilibrium, winning the ball on the edge of the penalty area and sliding a pass across for Nano to crash a shot into the roof of the net. But with the fans celebrating a sure victory, Toledo scrambled in a shot after Ponzio's free kick fell loose in the area. And two minutes later the Paraguayan left back popped up again on a rapid counterattack to beat Aragoneses again and spoil the party.
