Atlético Madrid joined Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table on six points after beating Albacete 0-2 in the last match on Sunday night. All the action came in the second half, visiting manager César Ferrando giving the game a boost by bringing on Salva and Luccin for Simeone and Colsa at the break. Salva was in action right away, heading onto the bar and having another shot cleared off the line by Peña, but the excellent Pablo also saved the day at the other end on his return to the Carlos Belmonte stadium, heading away Redondo's effort with the keeper beaten.

Valbuena saved well from Ibagaza soon afterwards, but he was left stranded a few minutes later when a weak headed back pass by Buades was intercepted by Fernando Torres, who rounded the keeper to open the scoring. And Torres it was who put the game to rest in the last minute, setting up Ibagaza for him to score his side's second. The last time Atlético Madrid won their opening two games in the first division, they went on to win the double. Whether they have the mettle to do so or not may well be clear next weekend, when they act as hosts to high flying Barcelona.
