Sevilla moved up in to the UEFA cup spots after a 2-1 win over struggling Real Sociedad, who ended the day at the bottom of the table having only picked up two points all season. The home side came out looking for a win, with Jesús Navas crashing a shot against the bar and Aranda (substituting the injured Baptista) unable to finish off in front of goal. But it was the Basque team who took the lead just after the hour mark with a spectacular shot off the crossbar from Rossato, who was making his first start for his new side.

Sergio Ramos equalised before the break though with another long shot, and Sevilla were back in the driving seat. Antonio López brought a spectacular save out of Riesgo, and Darío Silva finished things off with a second goal midway through the second half. Curiously the Uruguayan striker almost left the field a few minutes before when the fourth official mixed up his number with that of López, manager Caparrós dashing to correct the mistake before it was too late. After Silva's goal the three points were in the bag, and only a header wide of the mark from Gabilondo caused any concern for the home fans.
