Getafe recorded their second win of the season in front of a capacity crowd, Pachón scoring a hat-trick as they beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1. It was the first time the two sides had ever met, but with the game less than a minute old there was already a goal on the scoreboard, Pachón getting on the end of Riki's low cross to beat Aranzubia.

After that though the tempo dropped, with both sides tackling hard and giving away few chances. The locals were lucky to get away free though when the ball struck Pernía's arm in the penalty area, referee Lizondo Cortés ruling that it had been accidental.

Valverde was missing two of his key players, Ezquerro through injury and Yeste with gastric enteritis, and others had been rested after Thursday night's UEFA cup win. At half time the manager was forced to bring on Etxeberría, and after putting one effort just wide, the Spanish international winger levelled the scores with a low shot after cutting in from the right wing.

It only took the home side ten minutes to restore the lead though, Pachón fortunate to see the ball rebound off him into the net after Aranzubia rushed to clear a poor back-pass from Iraola. And four minutes later Pachón had his third, heading down past the keeper after good work from Craioveanu and Cotelo. The result takes the Madrid based side above their opponents and out of the relegation zone.
