Real Madrid came from a goal down to draw 1-1 at Betis, but they still ended the day down in tenth place pending Sunday's matches, now nine points behind leaders Barcelona. Oliveira was a nightmare for Mejía down the left wing early on, and he brought a good save out of Casillas and then set up Joaquín for another shot at the keeper early on. Raúl had a penalty appeal turned down by referee Pino Zamorano after he fell under Lembo's challenge, and then had a goal disallowed (correctly) after he headed Figo's cross past Prats from an offside position. But it was Betis who took the lead ten minutes before the break, Fernando slipping the ball through for Oliveira to fire a shot wide of Casillas.

García Remón brought on Owen for Samuel at half time, an attacking move which eventually paid off when Ronaldo equalised after picking up a return pass from Zidane. It was the Brazilian striker's first goal for his club since the opening day of the season, and only the fifth his side have scored in the league to date. Oliveira had tested Casillas again shortly before the goal, and Pino waved away a penalty appeal when Edu was felled by Pavón on the edge of the area. But in the end Madrid could have stolen away the three points when Prats recovered quickly to push away Zidane's fierce shot in injury time. A point apiece was a fair result though, a third 1-1 draw in a row for Serra Ferrer's side.
