Deportivo La Coruña moved back into the top four pending Sunday's games after beating newly promoted Getafe 2-1, their first home win in the league this season. Irureta rested some of his key players for Tuesday's Champions' League fixture with Liverpool, including Mauro Silva, Víctor and Luque, but they were never really in trouble on a rainy night at the Riazor stadium. Fran shot just over the bar following a Munitis corner early on, and Sergio opened the scoring a few minutes later, his long shot taking a deflection off a defender's boot to wrong-foot his namesake, Sergio Sánchez.

Valerón was determined to show Luis Aragonés that he was wrong to leave him out of Spain's squad, and he went close a couple of times before the break. Substitute Craioveanu shot over the bar at the other end and set up Riki for him to shoot into the side netting soon afterwards, but Getafe born Víctor put the result beyond doubt when he got in front of Pernía to head Capdevila's cross down past Sergio. Cotelo pulled one back near the end when he bent a low free kick round the wall, and Craioveanu was unlucky to be ruled offside when he broke free in injury time. But it was too late, and the Madrid based side drop down near to the relegation zone after a fourth away defeat in a row.
