Sevilla moved clear in second spot after beating fourth placed Atlético Madrid 2-1 in a hard fought match on Sunday evening. Aitor Ocio got the first goal early on following a short free kick, his shot taking a slight deflection off Ibagaza, and Aranda should have made it two soon afterwards but was unable to find a way around Leo Franco. Carmona Méndez waved away the striker's appeal for a penalty, but that was about the referee's last action of the match, an injury forcing him to hand over his whistle to the fourth referee.

The Andalusians were on top for the rest of the first half, with Leo Franco the busiest man on the pitch. And seven minutes after the restart they extended the lead when Baptista picked the ball up in midfield and held off a couple of defenders before curling a shot past the keeper from left of the area.

With the introduction of Salva and Paunovic, Atlético got back into the game though, the striker heading one effort wide from the Serbian's cross, and Esteban was forced into a couple of saves from Fernando Torres. And in the last minute Pablo pulled a goal back, shooting into an empty net after Antonio López had hit the post following a corner. It was too late though, and although López did have time for one last free kick from the edge of the area, his shot went way over.
