Benito Floro became the first managerial victim of the season after his side Mallorca lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad. The coach had been heavily criticised after the team dropped into the relegation zone, and he was replaced by caretaker Tomeu Llompart the day after the match.

Their opponents were also struggling down in the bottom half of the table though, but they took the lead in the twelfth minute with a Karpin penalty after Kovacevic was barged over by Müller in the area. Luis García could have levelled the scores only a couple of minutes later though, but his shot came back off the post into the hands of Riesgo, who as chance would have it was facing up to his under 21 team mate Moyà in the opposite goal.

Riesgo could do nothing though early in the second half when Cortés lost his marker and crossed in for Arango to power a header into the top corner of the net. Real threw everything forward after that, Karpin hitting the post and Moyà producing a string of good saves to keep the scores level. Riesgo tipped an effort from Arango onto the post at the other end, but soon afterwards substitute De Paula struck the winning goal with a shot on the turn after Kovacevic headed the ball across. It signalled the end for Floro.
