Málaga and Deportivo La Coruña shared the points in a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening, and both ended the day in the upper half of the table. Gregorio Manzano had some difficulties putting out his line up, particularly in attack with Amoroso injured and Wanchope not fully recovered from a stomach upset, but the Costa Ricense striker was eventually passed fit enough to play. And within seven minutes he had his name on the scoresheet, beating the offside trap to run on to Leko's lofted pass and volleying the ball past Molina.

Manuel Pablo had to cut out a dangerous cross from Miguel Angel soon afterwards with Wanchope ready to pull the trigger, and Leko had a strike disallowed for offside soon afterwards. And before the half time whistle Edgar fired another shot into the side netting after a run down the right wing.

Only Luque was causing any problems for the local defence, and Málaga continued to attack after the break. Wanchope missed a chance to extend the lead, and Miguel Angel crashed a long shot against the crossbar. Irureta decided it was time for changes, and went for broke bringing on Fran, Munitis and then Diego Tristán for only his second brief run out since returning from injury. And it was Tristán who saved the day near the end, getting on the end of a Munitis cross to head down past the stranded Calatayud. Depor had got off jail, and the home fans went home ruing two points lost.
