Espanyol drop out of the European spots after being held to a 0-0 draw by Villarreal. Both sides were trying to shake off midweek cup defeats, but in the end it was a dull game with few scoring chances. Kameni had to make two important saves from long shots by Armando Sa and Forlán early on, and Riquelme went close with a long free kick before half time. But the home side had not managed a shot at goal in 45 minutes, and Lotina brought on Fredson after the break to try and change things.

Soon afterwards though he lost Tamudo to an injury which could keep him out for a month or so, and the only time his side came close to scoring after that were in two penalty appeals, the first for hands by Quique Alvarez which Rodríguez Santiago chose to ignore, and the second for a possible foul by Armando Sa on Corominas, which the referee considered to be a dive and for which the young midfielder was booked.
