A late equaliser from Atlético Madrid's Colsa spoilt Héctor Cúper's return party at Mallorca. There was a festive atmosphere in the San Moix stadium to welcome the new manager back to the club where he had won them their only trophy, the Spanish super-cup, and had also taken them to Spanish and Cupwinners Cup finals. And there was a welcome back too for four of their ex players, Leo Franco, Paunovic, Colsa and Ibagaza, who had all gone on to seek their fortune with the Madrid based side.

The match itself was a disappointment though, with only a couple of touches from Fernando Torres breaking the boredom before a magnificently struck free kick from Arango set the home crowd alight. Even that though was tinged with controversy, as the referee's decision to award the previous foul on Jorge López was dubious to say the least.

Atlético came out looking for the equaliser after the break, with Westerveld saving from a Fernando Torres toe poke and Pablo celebrating his call up for Spain with a header against the post. It was two of the ex Mallorca substitutes who eventually got it though, Colsa getting on the end of Ibagaza's free kick to flick the ball on past the Dutch keeper. The midfielder didn't celebrate the goal out of respect for his ex colleagues and fans, but it left the Balearic side down at the bottom of the table and kept the visitors in touch with the European spots. Cúper has some work to do.
