Athletic Bilbao moved away from the danger zone with a convincing 3-0 win over Racing Santander in the first game on Saturday evening. There was a defiant mood in the ground as the crowd held up cards with the number 18 shirt on and the local players came out wearing T-shirts calling for justice for Gurpegui after his drugs ban appeal was turned down by the Spanish courts. And within six minutes the hosts were in front, Ezquerro starting things off with a carbon copy of his goal from the week before, cutting in from the left to chip the keeper.

Yeste brought a good save out of Aouate and Benayoun shot just wide of the goal defended by debutant Pampín at the other end before Gurpegui got on the end of Yeste's free kick to head his team's second, a goal which was particularly celebrated by his team mates and fans. And Urzaiz headed the third in the second half from Iraola's cross to finish things off. It could have been more as well, Arriaga having a strike disallowed for offside and Ezquerro missing another chance. But it was Gurpegui's night, and he was substituted to a standing ovation near the end.
