Villareal moved away from the danger zone after beating Getafe 1-2, leaving their opponents just a place above the bottom three. The "Yellow Submarine" had not won away from home in the league since mid-April, but they went in front in the eighth minute when Guayre picked up a pass from Riquelme to round a defender and score from an acute angle. Lucho Figueroa got the ball in the net soon afterwards only to see the strike ruled out for offside, but Nano came close to equalising before the break when he headed just wide of the post.

Quique Flores made two attacking changes at the break, and only an outstretched hand from Reina prevented Vivar Dorado from scoring soon after the restart. But it was Villarreal's substitute Diego Forlán who made the difference, running on to another through ball by Riquelme to ghost past Sánchez Broto and find the net.

Both sides had chances after that, Riki just failing to turn a long cross into the net and Gallardo shooting into the side netting, and Forlán bringing a fingertip save out of the local keeper at the other end. Seven minutes from the end Nano did get a late consolation goal for the hosts following a corner, but it was not enough to save them a point.
