Athletic Bilbao climbed away from the danger zone with their second away win in four days, following up their runaway UEFA cup victory in Liège with a 0-2 win at Zaragoza. Both sides came in to the game having qualified for the knock out stage of the UEFA cup midweek, but it was the visitors who started the better of the two, with Yeste hitting the bar with a looping shot on the quarter hour mark. Referee Fernández Borbolán upset the local crowd turning down a penalty appeal by David Villa but then giving one to the Basques soon afterwards when Milito fouled Yeste. However Luis García guessed correctly and dived to stop Iraola's kick.

The Basques made up for it though soon afterwards, Ezquerro beating the keeper with a header from a corner soon after the restart. And Ezquerro finished things off with a second goal a few minutes later, his fifth in four days, taking his club past the 4,000 goal mark in the league. Zaragoza had no reply, and the unhappy fans gave the players a hard time at the end after a third home defeat in a row. Víctor Muñoz's side have now gone seven league games without a win, and they drop into the lower reaches of the table as a result.
