Betis consolidated their sixth position in the table after beating Mallorca 2-0, and they move to within two points of city rivals Sevilla. The visitors came to the Ruiz de Lopera stadium needing points to pull away from the relegation zone, and for a few minutes they looked the better side. But Luis García shot weakly at Doblas when free in front of goal, and Moyà had to save the day at the other end when he tipped Fernando's shot onto the post and away.

By now Serra Ferrer's side were back in the driving seat against the manager's old club, and they took the lead when Joaquín and Oliveira combined to leave Edu with the easy task of turning the ball into an unguarded net. Doblas saved well from Jorge López at the other end, but Moyà was also in action again, stopping efforts from Oliveira and Fernando either side of the interval.

Either team could have scored in the second half, Joaquín testing Moyà again from a free kick and new boy Romeo and substitute Tuni going close for the visitors. But five minutes from the end Joaquín found Edu for him to beat the keeper for a second time, and it was all over. Héctor Cúper's side ended the weekend in joint bottom spot, now six points away from safety, and to make matters worse they have to visit the Bernabeu stadium next weekend.
