Villarreal dropped out of the European spots after losing 1-0 to Zaragoza. Both sides came in to the game with UEFA cup victories under their belts, but the locals had the better of the first half, with Reina having to make saves from Galletti, Oscar and Villa in the opening half hour. He could do nothing though six minutes before the break when Galletti headed on Ponzio's long cross for David Villa to fire a low shot into the bottom corner for what was to be the only goal of the game.

The visitors did show some form after the restart, Sorín beating the offside trap to run through and chip the ball on to the bar. But Peña almost put through his own net when he hit his own crossbar trying to clear Galletti's cross, and Villa could have made it two when he hit the side netting late on. It was an important win for Víctor Muñoz's side, who move safely up to mid-table as a result.
