Atlético Madrid's push for a place in Europe took a serious blow after they lost 2-1 at Racing Santander, and although they are still in eighth place, they are now five points behind the team above them Betis. César Ferrando's side took the lead in the twelfth minute from the penalty spot after Fernando Torres was pulled down by Pablo Casar, the young striker converting the kick himself. The decision by referee Lizondo Cortés was hotly protested though by the locals as they felt that Torres had dived, and he was booed every time he touched the ball after that.

Racing had a chance to draw level when Javi Guerrero picked up a pass from Benayoun and went for goal, but his shot was cleared off the line by Pablo with Leo Franco beaten. But soon afterwards Molinero could only head backwards a long ball from Moratón, and Regueiro snapped it up and beat Franco from an acute angle.

Atlético should have gone back in front when Gronkjaer and half time substitute Salva rattled the woodwork either side of half time, but Aganzo struck the winner soon afterwards after a twisting run by Anderson Silva set him up to shoot wide of the keeper. After that Nando Yosu's side closed up shop to hold on for a much needed victory which takes them four points clear of the drop zone.
