Betis moved up four places to third pending Sunday's games after beating local rivals Málaga 1-2 on Saturday evening. Serra Ferrer's side went ahead in only the fifth minute after the local defence failed to clear a Marcos Assunçao free kick, Arzu's shot being blocked by his own man Rivas but falling kindly to Juanito who steered a shot past Arnau. Duda chipped a cross on to the bar at the other end ten minutes or so later, but Edu made it two almost immediately after Fernando set him up.

Málaga didn't give up though, Gerardo hitting the woodwork again straight from the kick off, and Baiano pulled one back midway through the first half with an incisive strike after controlling Romero's long cross. The home side forced six corners before the break, Litos in particular almost scoring from a couple of them, and only quick reactions from Doblas prevented Miguel Angel from scoring before the break.

Antonio Tapia's side kept the pressure in the second half, with Baiano putting a couple of efforts over the bar and Doblas saving again from Duda, but Oliveira could have wrapped things up when he picked up Joaquín's through ball and burst through only to shoot over the bar. They had done enough though to take away the three points, leaving the locals once again back down in fifteenth place in the table.
