Sevilla moved up to third in the table after winning 1-3 against Espanyol, one of their direct rivals for the European spots. The Andalusians took an early lead when Jordi drove the ball past Kameni after the defence failed to clear a corner, and Baptista intercepted a pass from Lopo and ran on to make it two a few minutes later. The home side felt themselves unlucky to have an appeal for a penalty on Lopo turned down soon afterwards, and Maxi headed a good chance over the bar. But Kameni had to be at his best to keep out an effort from Jesús Navas close to half time.

Tamudo and De la Peña both tested Notario either side of half time but they were lacking support, and Lotina decided to bring on youth internationals Corominas and then Jonathan Soriano as the second half progressed. It appeared to be a good decision, as the keeper could only parry a long shot from the midfielder and Jonathan nipped in to head home his first goal in league football. Lopo fired a shot wide as the Catalans threw everything forward, but with Kameni joining the rest of his side in the penalty area for a last ditch corner, the ball was cleared out to Daniel Alves who ran on from the halfway line to score in to an empty net.
