Betis dropped out of the European positions completely after losing 2-3 to Real Sociedad, their first defeat in seven games. Serra Ferrer's side started the weekend in fifth spot, but they found themselves behind in only the fourth minute when Labaka headed Barkero's corner over Doblas from the back of the area.

After that though the Andalusians fought back, and Benjamín thought he had equalised when he got the ball in the net only to be ruled offside. And Oliveira tested Alberto twice before the break, once with a glancing header from a Marcos Assunçao free kick and once with a shot from a wide angle which the keeper tipped on to the bar.

The pressure eventually paid off though, and with a few minutes of the restart they were in front. With less than a minute on the clock Joaquín picked up a long ball from Assunçao to turn Brechet and beat the keeper inside the near post. And soon afterwards Fernando juggled the ball through to Oliveira for him to find the net again.

Eventually though the efforts of their midweek cup tie took their toll, and Barkero levelled the scores on the follow up after Doblas could only push out a close range shot from substitute De Paula. Fernando came close to restoring the lead with a brave header over the bar despite a flying foot from a defender, and Denilson also headed another effort wide. But shortly after Karpin hit the bar, a long free kick bounced past everyone, and Gabilondo on the far post headed the ball across for Uranga to finish off on the goal line.
