Espanyol's disastrous start to the season continued, and after failing to win any of their pre-season games they were defeated 0-2 at home by Bernd Schuster's Getafe. The visitors clearly came to defend, and the only time the locals got through in the first half was when Tamudo headed over the top and when Edu Costa had an effort cleared off the line by a defender with the keeper beaten.

The Catalans came closest to scoring though soon after the restart when Ito shot against the post, but almost immediately Gavilán made himself space outside of the area and caught out Kameni with a long shot which squeezed inside the post. Lotina brought on Corominas for Costa, but before he had time to contribute the visitors had scored again, Riki finishing off after Gavilán beat his man down the left and saw his shot pushed across goal by Kameni.

After that the home side fell apart, and only two or three first class saves by Kameni stopped the scoreline from growing. Jofre did come close to getting one back near the end but his shot went wide across the goalmouth, and nobody was there to finish off. The crowd booed off their players in the end, a far cry from the side that won a place in Europe last season.
