Real Sociedad climbed off the bottom of the table with a 2-1 win over Basque rivals Alavés. It was the San Sebastian side's second derby game in a row, but unlike their fixture against Athletic, this time they made the early running. Barkero opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the tenth minute after ex Real defender Sarriegi fouled Kovacevic, and Mikel Alonso hit the post from a free kick soon afterwards. And Barkero got himself a second goal before half time with a free kick which Bonano couldn't prevent from entering the net.

The visitors had only troubled Riesgo once when Jandro set up De Lucas for a shot over the bar, and after the restart Real could have gone further ahead when Uranga rattled the woodwork once again. Nihat came on to great applause, his first home appearance since a long lay-off for injury, and with the rain falling heavily it looked like the game would peter out. But Alavés still had something left, and after Bodipo went close with a long shot, De Lucas set up an exciting last couple of minutes with a well struck free kick in injury time.
