Celta return to the top of the first division after beating Villarreal 1-2 in the Madrigal stadium. The Galicians were on the back foot early on, José Marí hitting the woodwork and Pinto having to save from Diego Forlán soon afterwards. But they never looked back from the twenty-sixth minute, when Baiano got on the end of Antonio Nuñez's cross to open the scoring. Viera had to be at his best to keep out a strong shot from Jorge a few minutes later, and just a minute in to the second half Baiano got his second of the night after collecting a pass from Angel.

Pellegrini made three attacking changes around the hour mark, and Pinto was forced to make a vital save from Diego Forlán as the locals pushed forward. But the visiting defence held fast until ten minutes from the end, when Riquelme finally beat the keeper with a well struck free kick which went in off the foot of the post. It was too late for much more though, and the "Yellow Submarine" fell to another defeat which left them at the bottom of the table.
