Last week's leaders Celta held on to top spot after beating Sevilla 2-1 in the last game of Sunday evening. Fernando Vázquez's side had been displaced by Getafe the night before, but within a minute they were in front when Baiano leaped acrobatically to flick a Nuñez cross past Palop with the outside of his heel. And on the quarter hour mark Oubiña made it two with a jinking run through the Sevilla defence before rolling the ball into the net.

By now the Andalusians were on the back foot, and it could have been three had Palop not produced a first class save from David Silva. The visitors had a chance to pull one back when Placente fouled Alves in the area near to half time though, but Pinto guessed right to save Luis Fabiano's spot kick.

Early in the second half Sevilla were awarded a second penalty when Contreras barged over Kanouté, and this time Maresca converted the kick to put the visitors back in the game. Celta could have increased the lead when a free kick from substitute Gustavo López almost cleared Palop, and the keeper was called upon again to stop Baiano at point blank range. But Kepa almost saved a point when his header was kept out by Pinto late on.
