Espanyol came away from Sevilla with a point after a 1-1 draw, although it would have been three had referee Puentes Leira not disallowed a goal by Corominas late on. Both sides came in to the match with confidence after qualifying for the league stage of the UEFA cup on Thursday night, Juande Ramos sticking to his front pairing of Kanouté and Saviola after their success in that match.

But it was the visitors who struck first, Fredson heading Armando Sá's cross down past Palop to open the scoring with just over a quarter of an hour gone. Saviola came close to equalising a minute later when he shot just wide of Kameni's goal, but otherwise they were unable to make much of an impact on a packed defence.

Ramos decided to go for broke and brought on Renato for Javi Navarro at the break, but he found himself without central defenders when Dragutinovic was injured a few minutes later.

Still they pushed forward, Kameni doing well to keep out efforts from Kepa and Kanouté. Espanyol seemed to have things wrapped up when Corominas headed past Palop with a minute to go, but Puentes Leira incorrectly ruled out the strike for offside. And almost immediately play went up the other end, and Moisés turned a Jesús Navas cross into his own net to make it all square.
