Valencia missed out on a chance to close up on the leaders after they were held to a 1-1 draw by ten man Racing Santander in the Mestalla stadium. After a couple of disappointing results Quique Flores made several changes, drafting in Kluivert to join Villa up front. And with only twelve minutes on the clock, Albelda volleyed home a spectacular first goal from outside of the area after Moratón had headed clear Kluivert's cross to give his side the lead.

Racing fought back though, with Stephane Dalmat in particular giving Miguel a hard time down the left flank, and on the half hour mark a passing move between Dalmat and Felipe Melo ended with Aganzo sliding home the equaliser. The crowd started to show their displeasure as the locals were unable to make any head-road in a well organised defence, and Flores eventually decided to replace an ineffective Kluivert with Angulo.

The visitors were left with ten men when Melo got himself sent off for insulting a linesman, but they closed ranks in order to protect the point. Villa headed against the post and Dudu Aouate made a couple of important saves from Angulo and Vicente, but the Cantabrians held on to extend their unbeaten away record to five games.
