Betis came away from Racing Santander with a point after a 1-1 draw, a result which was just enough to take the Andalusians over Espanyol and out of the relegation spots. The home side were desperate for a victory after two defeats in a row in the Sardinero stadium and they pushed forward from the start, with Matabuena missing the best of three chances in the first quarter of an hour. But midway through the first half Chelsea goalscoring hero Dani headed Serra Ferrer's side in front with his team's first real attack, the referee waving away claims for a foul on Ayoze by the centre forward.

The Cantabrians started the second half as they did the first, Stephane Dalmat shooting just wide and Contreras forced in to a first class save from Antonio Tomás. Joaquín could have increased the visitors' lead though when his shot from close range bounced down off the crossbar and away.

Manolo Preciado finally turned to Antoñito, the on loan Sevilla striker who had promised to score against his old city rivals, and within less than ten minutes he burst through to lift the ball over Juanito and shoot under Contreras for the equaliser. After that both sides could have scored, Antoñito having another effort saved by the keeper, and Dani and Juanito both failing to find the target when free in front of Aouate. But a point apiece was a fair result in the end.
