Alavés climbed out of the drop zone, above Racing and Betis, after a first ever win in Athletic Bilbao's San Mamés stadium. The Vitoria based side had not even taken a point away from the stadium in their ten previous visits, but they dominated the opening minutes and took the lead when Nené left Murillo for dead before beating Aranzubia. Javier Clemente's side did their best to equalise after that, with Urzaiz getting on the end of Yeste's cross to head against the bar on the quarter hour mark. But with Lacruz out of position replacing Orbaiz they could do no more until early in the second half, when Luis Prieto fired another effort against the post.

Costanzo was in action a few minutes later to save from Urzaiz, and Aranzubia also had to keep out Nené and Lacen as the visitors looked to surprise their hosts on the counter attack. With eight minutes to go Athletic should have equalised when they were awarded a penalty after Sarriegui handled in the area, but Yeste blasted his kick over the top. And with the game coming to an end Bodipo got on the end of Nené's cross to make it two and wrap things up. The defeat left the hosts firmly anchored to the bottom of the table, and Clemente has some work to do if he is to turn things around.
