Athletic Bilbao moved off the bottom of the table to the detriment of Betis after a hard fought 0-1 victory over Mallorca, Javier Clemente's first win in the league since taking over a month or so ago. Both sides had been struggling this season, and although Héctor Cúper promised several changes, he eventually only made two, Pereyra and Okubo coming in for Borja and Doni. The Japanese forward caused some problems for Aranzubia with a couple of shots early on, but Clemente's five man defence snuffed out any danger and the rest of the first half was void of any further attacks by either side.

Athletic took the lead though with virtually their first shot at goal, Yeste setting up Luis Prieto with a short free kick for the defender to blast a long shot which skidded past Toni Prats on the wet surface. After that the home side did their best to get back in the game, Pereyra heading a corner against the bar and Víctor firing a shot straight at Aranzubia when free on goal. But it was not to be, and the visitors had taken the three points for the first time since the opening day of the season.
