Real Madrid produced a last minute come back to save a 2-2 draw at Real Sociedad, a result which probably kept Luxemburgo in a job for a little while longer at least. The visitors had the better of the first half, with Beckham setting up Robinho only for him to lose out to Riesgo, and Sergio Ramos heading a free kick from the England captain against the crossbar. But on the stroke of half time referee Undiano Mallenco awarded a hotly disputed penalty to the locals after De Paula fell under a challenge from Roberto Carlos, and Xabi Prieto fired the spot kick high in to the roof of the net.

The rain in San Sebastian started to fall heavily after the restart, and the Basque side went further ahead when Casillas could only push away a shot from Nihat, and the ball fell to De Paula for him to head in to an empty net. Luxemburgo had already made one attacking change, bringing on Baptista at the break for Pavón, and he decided to introduce another forward Soldado in to the fray. Just two minutes later though Sergio Ramos was sent off (for the third time this season) after picking up a second bookable offence, and he had no option but to change Robinho for defender Raúl Bravo.

After the problems the coach had had with defensive changes, there was more than one raised eyebrow. But a couple of minutes later numbers were evened up when Garitano also picked up a second booking, and with three minutes to go Bravo scrambled the ball in to the back of the net after Helguera's shot was blocked by Riesgo following a corner. Madrid were back in the game, and a couple of minutes later the defence failed to clear Beckham's cross, and the ball eventually fell to Zidane who fired a shot past the keeper. Luxemburgo had been let off the hook, and the home fans went home disappointed.
