Osasuna's good start to the season continued with a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid, and Javier Aguirre's side ended the weekend two points behind leaders Barcelona. Madrid's new coach López Caro was in charge for the first time in the Bernabeu stadium, and he only made one change from the line up he put out against Málaga, Beckham returning from suspension to replace Zidane, who was carrying a knock. Aguirre though made his usual round of changes, holding true once again to his rotation system despite the prestige of his rivals.

Right from the start it was a physical match, and after Roberto Carlos was booked for a tackle which left Valdo limping, referee Pérez Burrull had no doubts in showing the red card to Puñal for an elbow on the Brazilian full back just a couple of minutes later. There were still only fifteen minutes on the clock, and although Madrid had gone close to scoring beforehand when Sergio Ramos just failed to turn in Beckham's cross, they could not take advantage of the extra man. Only a Beckham free kick just wide of the mark caused any problems for the visitors, and Raúl García and Webó both tested Casillas at the other end before the interval.

Ricardo did well to save from Baptista after the restart, but Raúl García shot wide, Delporte had a penalty appeal turned down and Josetxo failed to convert another chance as the visitors kept up the fight. López eventually had to turn to Zidane and then Soldado, but disaster struck when Helguera tried to head clear a centre from Raúl García and only succeeded in leaving it on a plate for Milosevic to head down past the keeper.

A few minutes later though, Madrid's two substitutes saved the day, Zidane stretching out a leg to lay Guti's through ball into the path of Soldado for him to score in to an empty net. And in a frenetic finish from the "Galacticos", Ricardo made another important save from Guti and Soldado hit the post (although the play was eventually ruled out for offside). Osasuna held on though to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches, and the Pamplona based side stay six points clear of their opponents, who remain in third place heading up a group of four teams all on 29 points.
