Espanyol rounded off a good week with a last minute 0-1 win over Real Sociedad. The Catalans were in a confident mood after their midweek cup win against Getafe, and Mikel Alonso had to clear a header from Tamudo off the line in the opening minutes. The visiting captain was a constant menace throughout the first half, and only a couple of good saves from Riesgo prevented him from opening the scoring.

With five minutes to go before half time though the visitors were struck a blow when Jarque was sent off for a second bookable offence, and Gorka had to be at his best to tip the resulting Gabilondo free kick on to the bar and away. Amorrortu took advantage of the extra man to bring on new signing Skoubo at the break, and the striker was in action immediately, shooting just wide on the turn and then hitting the bar with a header.

Espanyol held on though, and Luis García could have given them the lead when he too hit the bar with a shot from the edge of the area. García gave up his place a few minutes later to debutant Pandiani, and with the game coming to an end the ex Deportivo forward headed the ball on to Tamudo for him to pull away from two defenders and curl a shot low in to the net. It was his 100th goal for the club, and it took his side just above their opponents in the league table.
