Atlético Madrid got their revenge for being knocked out of the cup by Zaragoza midweek, their 0-2 victory in the Romareda stadium ending a run of ten games without a win and also stopping the home side's run of 16 points from the last six matches. The hosts had the better of the opening minutes, Ewerthon bringing a good save out of Leo Franco and Diego Milito hitting the side netting. But it was Atlético who took the lead in one of their first attacks, Maxi picking up a return pass from Ibagaza to shoot low under César on the half hour mark.

Víctor Muñoz made two changes at the break, and his side were unlucky not to be given a penalty after the ball hit Pablo on the arm soon after the restart. Just a few minutes later though referee Iturralde González decided that César had fouled Maxi in the area, and Fernando Torres slotted home the spot kick, only his second league goal in thirteen games. "El Niño" had another strike ruled out for a borderline offside minutes later, but Zaragoza themselves had a second penalty claim turned down when Maxi appeared to handle in the area later on. This was just not their night though, and Pepe Murcia had his first win since taking over from Carlos Bianchi a couple of weeks ago.
