Athletic Bilbao climbed out of the relegation spots with a 1-0 win over Getafe on Saturday evening. The Basque side had not won in four games, and Javier Clemente reverted to a five man defence in an attempt to stem the tide of goals against. For a short while it worked, with Orbaiz and Lacruz bringing saves out of Calatayud in the opening ten minutes, and Iraola having another effort blocked a few minutes later. But Bernd Schuster's side gradually fought their way back, and Riki and Güiza both caused problems for the defence close to half time.

The visitors continued to push forward after the restart, Pernía bringing a good save out of Lafuente, Matellán heading wide and Riki shooting just past the post. Clemente changed his plans to bring on Dañobeitia, and soon afterwards his side won a penalty from referee Puentes Leira after Yeste fell under a challenge from Matellán. Orbaiz coolly slotted home the spot kick after the protests died down, and Athletic were out of the drop zone.
