Celta took advantage of slips by the teams above them to move back up to fifth after beating Racing Santander 0-1. The Galicians had been unable to win in the Sardinero stadium in 21 previous visits, and at first it looked as if they would have to wait another year as a brave Pinto kept out efforts from Pinilla and later on from Neru. In between referee Iturralde González ruled out a goal from Antoñito for what he incorrectly thought was a hand ball, and the two sides went in at the break level.

Jonathan also went close with a free kick after the break, but the visitors started to push forward and Aouate had to be at his best to keep out Javi Guerrero, Canobbio and David Silva. As time went by though the game seemed to be heading for a draw, but with only a minute to go substitute Jesús Perera picked up a pass from Canobbio to beat Aouate and score the winning goal with a shot which took a deflection off a defender.
