Athletic Bilbao moved out of the relegation spots for the first time in several weeks after beating Racing Santander 0-1. The first half was a dull affair between two defensive sides, and neither keeper was particularly troubled. Preciado and Clemente both decided to bring on extra fire power at the break, Antoñito replacing Matabuena for the locals and Urzaiz substituting Dañobeitia for the visitors.

The move seemed to work better for the Cantabrians though, and Lafuente had to be at his best to keep out Antoñito a few minutes after the restart, and Pinilla and Oscar Serrano later on. Serrano also fired another effort over the bar as the locals came looking for a win, but with five minutes to go Aduriz slipped the ball through for Urzaiz to run on and score the winner. The result takes Athletic to the top of a group of five teams level on 22 points, with Racing (who had Moratón sent off in injury time) now only five points above them in the table.
