The local derby between Getafe and Atlético Madrid was almost called off as a hail storm left a white blanket covered the pitch before kick off, but referee Teixeira Vitienes finally agreed for the game to go on despite the difficult conditions. Atlético ran out 0-3 winners though to make it five victories in a row under new coach Pepe Murcia, taking them up to within four points of the European places.

The visitors started well, Kezman just failing to get on the end of a Fernando Torres cross and Torres intercepting a bad back pass from Matellán but shooting wide. Leo Franco had some work to do at the other end though, stopping a couple of efforts from Güiza and a free kick from Pernía, who is close to agreeing terms to cross the city in the summer to the Calderón stadium.

On the half hour mark though, Luccin picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area to beat Calatayud and open the scoring. Franco was in action again to save from Güiza and Cotelo before the break, but just two minutes after the restart Petrov's free kick was deflected into the path of Maxi, who fired a shot in to the roof of the net for his side's second.

After that Bernd Schuster's side had little reply, Franco only being tested once more by a tricky cross from Cotelo. And midway through the half Fernando Torres made it three when he ran on to Luccin's through ball to shoot low past the keeper. Atlético are on their way back at last, and Carlos Bianchi is already forgotten.
