Celta are back up to fifth after beating fourth placed Osasuna 2-0, and the Galicians are now only a point behind Javier Aguirre's side in the table. Fernando Baiaino opened the scoring in only the fifth minute after picking up a short pass to beat Elía from outside of the area, giving his side the best possible start. Valdo came close to equalising when he drove a shot just wide of the post, but the hosts were growing in confidence, Sergio having a header saved by Elía and Baiano heading just wide.

Things quietened down after the interval, with the home side sitting back and looking for the breakaway. And with twenty minutes to go the tactic worked to perfection when Canobbio set off on a long run, leaving two or three defenders for dead before rounding the keeper to score. Tempers frayed after that, with several players clashing after a hard tackle by Flaño on Iriney, and Osasuna's Muñoz was shown a red card for pushing an opponent during the incident.
