Betis's poor season continues, and they drop to within two points of the relegation spots after a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Getafe. With first division salvation now the priority, Serra Ferrer decided not to reserve anyone for the midweek UEFA cup game, but even so they fell behind with just under a quarter of an hour gone when Paunovic headed home Gavilán's corner.

It could have been worse had Güiza not shot wide across goal just three minutes later, and despite a makeshift local defence, the Andalusians never really troubled Luis García throughout the first half. Pernía could have extended the lead when he curled a free kick against the bar soon after the restart, and Güiza wasted another chance when he tried to score himself rather than pass to the unmarked Gavilán.

Betis finally woke up in the last ten minutes, Luis Fernández testing Luis García a couple of times and Edu shooting wide. But Bernd Schuster's side had done enough for the three points, and they ended the weekend safely up in midtable. How their visitors would love to be in the same position right now.
