Osasuna made the short trip north to Bilbao but failed to get out of first gear in San Mamés. Athletic made most of the running and the veteran Etxeberria was a thorn in Osasuna's side throughout. In the seventh minute he found space on the left but the low cross was cut out.

There were few shots on target for either keeper to deal with although Ricardo had to parry away an Iraola drive after 20 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Iraola blasted over following fine play from Etxeberria.

Osasuna took half an hour to create a decent chance. Webó failed to connect properly with a cross from David Lopez allowing Lafuente to block. The visitors had their best spell just before half time. Lafuente had to punch clear a Raúl Garcia cross as Webó closed in. The African forward had another opportunity just on half time but had to turn first and hooked his shot just over.

Early in the second half Athletic posted a few warnings with dangerous crosses from the right where Iraola was enjoying a fine game. First Etxeberrria headed over and then Yeste headed wide. Yeste was to show once again that he is the Beckham of the Basque Country. Ever a danger with his set pieces he launched this one into the danger zone where Luis Prieto had drifted away from his marker. The defender's downward header beat Ricardo for the only goal of the match.

There was little cheer for the visitors who looked strangely out of sorts. Raul Garcia's long range drive failed to trouble Lafuente and their only other chance was a Romeo header from a tight angle which failed to hit the target.

With fifteen minutes to go Etxeberria left the park to loud applause and was replaced by Urzaiz. Osasuna threw on Delporte for Moha. However, both substitutes left the field early after receiving red cards following a scuffle near the end. The Lions held on for a deserved victory and are creeping away from the relegation zone.
