A convincing win for Real Madrid at last, their 4-0 victory over Deportivo taking them back up above Osasuna to second in the table. López Caro's side took the lead early on when Héctor deflected a Beckham free kick in to his own net, and Beckham had another free kick saved by Molina soon afterwards. Diego Tristán tried his luck at the other end, but Baptista missed a chance before Robinho sent Roberto Carlos away with a clever back heel pass for him to set up Ronaldo for a second goal.

By now Madrid were on a roll, with Robinho shooting just over and Ronaldo cutting through only to be closed down near the end. Cicinho had another effort saved, and Sergio Ramos made it three when he lost his markers to head Beckham's free kick wide of the keeper. The fans were so delighted that even Ronaldo was applauded off the pitch when he was substituted late on, and Baptista wrapped things up with a dipping free kick from the edge of the area which went in off the bar. Madrid still ended the day eleven points behind Barcelona, but the result was a big lift just a week before they visit the Nou Camp next Saturday.
