Athletic Bilbao and Mallorca failed to move away from the danger zone after a 1-1 draw, and they both ended the weekend down in the lower reaches of the table. Yeste put the Basque side ahead in only the second minute after intercepting a wild shot from Gurpegui and rounding Prats to score. But Arango went close a few minutes later with a header over the bar, and midway through the first half the Venezuelan midfielder equalised after Tuni won the ball off Expósito down by the left corner flag and floated a centre across goal.

Etxeberría could have restored the lead had Prats not pushed his volley over the top, but Pisculichi was unlucky to have a goal ruled out a few minutes later after Gurpegui and Lafuente ran in to each other and the striker had run the ball in to the net, referee Rodríguez Santiago ruling that the Bilbao player had been pushed in the incident. Gurpegui was rushed off to hospital with a broken cheek bone, the second substitution that Javier Clemente had to make, and before half time Etxeberría also limped off injured to be replaced by Dañobeitia.

The new man came close to putting his side ahead soon after the restart with a volley which Prats was able to save, and later in the half the keeper was in action again to turn a shot from Tiko away for a corner. Basinas drove a shot just wide of the post and Okubo put another effort over the bar for the visitors in between, but otherwise they made little impact on Lafuente's goal, and in the end they were grateful for another point against a direct rival for the drop.
