Valencia moved up to second spot in the league, ahead of Real Madrid thanks to a better head-to-head record, after beating Celta 0-1 on Saturday evening. The Galicians were looking to build on their recent good form, and a win would have taken them to within two points of their opponents. However the defeat left them down in sixth spot, and they could be out of the European places if results go against them on Sunday.

With on loan David Silva unable to play against his employers, De Ridder was the only new face in Fernando Vázquez's side, and he felt himself unlucky not to be given a penalty midway through the first half. Canobbio had fired a free kick over the bar a few minutes earlier, but it was the visitors who took the lead on a quick breakaway with half an hour gone, Angulo driving a low shot under Pinto after Regueiro squared the ball across.

Regueiro could have extended the lead before the break, and Pinto had to be at his best to keep out David Villa soon after the restart and Miguel later on. Cañizares was also in action though at the other end, saving efforts from Baiano and substitute Jesús Perera a few minutes later before the final whistle went. Curiously both keepers are currently heading up the Zamora table, but the clean sheet takes Cañizares back to the top. He will be more interested to know though that his side is currently occupying the second spot, which allows automatic qualification for the Champions League.
