Getafe and Villarreal cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw which left both virtually out of the running for the European places. The game got off to an electric start, Gavilán cutting past two or three defenders to curl a shot in off the post past Barbosa with less than thirty seconds on the clock, and Guille Franco equalising a minute later after César Arzo put him through.

After that though the action dropped off, and although both keepers did have some work to do they were never really in serious trouble. The result was another blow to the visitors after their elimination from the Champions League midweek, and they can now realistically only aspire to a place in the Intertoto Cup. The game was watched by Luis Aragonés, who was spying on Marcos Senna and on Mario Pernía, who has been given dual Spanish and Argentinian nationality and is now eligible for a World Cup call up.
