Alavés threw the relegation battle wide open again with a 2-0 win over Betis. The Vitoria based side were looking strong contenders for the drop, but the victory takes them within a point of Racing and two of their opponents and also Espanyol. The locals were on top right from the start, Juanito turning a cross on to his own crossbar before Aloisi got on the end of Nené's cross to beat Contreras.

The locals could have added to their lead before the break, and although Joaquín missed a chance to equalise after the restart, Nené made it two with a spectacular volley from Bodipo's cross. Alavés were left with ten men a few minutes later when De Lucas was shown a straight red for a hard tackle on Luis Fernández, but apart from a late header against the bar from Edu, the result was never in doubt.
