The biggest surprise of the day came at Montjuic, where new boys Gimnastic Tarragona beat neighbours Espanyol 0-1. The hosts arranged a special welcome for the Tarragona based side, who were returning to the top flight for the first time in over 50 years. But if they were expecting an easy ride they soon found out tht would not be the case when Pinilla tested Kameni in the opening minutes.

Espanyol had the better of the rest of the first half though, with De la Peña and Pandiani both bringing good saves out of Bizzarri and Luis García hitting the post with a free kick. But soon after the restart a long ball from Buades caught the defence out of position, and Campano took advantage to collect the pass and beat Kameni.

The locals were clearly stunned, and although David García cleared a possible equaliser from Pandiani off the line, the hosts could have lost by more had Kameni not made a couple of first class saves from Portillo. Nàstic had proved they will not be the whipping boys, and after losing the Spanish supercup to city neighbours Barcelona a few days ago, Espanyol are in need of a bit of morale.
