Goals: None.

A disappointing start for the new look Real Madrid, Fabio Capello's side being held to a dull 0-0 draw by Villarreal in the Bernabeu stadium. The coach included his four new signings in the starting line up, but other than a couple of efforts either side of half time by Cassano and Van Nistelrooy the visiting defence was hardly troubled.

At the other end Marcos Senna put Casillas to the test with a long shot, and Diego Forlán was closed down as he advanced on goal. Riquelme curled a free kick just wide of the post after the restart, and substitute José Marí had another effort saved by Casillas.

And with the game already in injury time Madrid had their first real effort on target, Roberto Carlos's low free kick being collected comfortably by Viera. A point each to start the season, but both coaches have work to do before the next game in two weeks' time.
