Gimnastic Tarragona played their first home game in the top flight in over 50 years, but in the end they were beaten 1-2 by Celta. A packed crowd turned up to see their side get off to a lively start, with Portillo shooting just over the bar early on. But the experience of the Galicians showed through, with Canobbio having a shot blocked by a defender and Baiano curling an effort against the post before the break. Then just four minutes after the restart Baiano got on the end of Gustavo López's cross, and although he didn't strike his shot cleanly, the ball rolled past Bizzarri and in to the net.

Celta were struck a serious blow a few minutes later when George Lucas broke his leg in a bad fall after jumping for a high ball with Gil, and soon afterwards Nàstic were awarded a penalty when substitute Makukula fell under a challenge from Lequi. Portillo drove home the spot kick, and for a few minutes the hosts pushed forward, Portillo almost catching out Pinto with a long shot. But with a quarter of an hour to go Nené connected with Canobbio's cross to shoot low past the keeper, and the game was over.
