Betis showed they are not missing Joaquín with a 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday evening. His place on the right wing was taken by home grown player Maldonado who produced the play of the night, leaving Sarriegui for dead to set up Edu for the second goal close to half time.

The first chance of the game though had fallen to the visitors, Gabilondo taking advantage of a mistake by Melli to shoot against the bar. A few minutes later though Juanito gave the Andalusians the lead, shooting past Aranzubia from close range after a scramble in front of goal.

After Edu's goal though the hosts were on top, and Aranzubia had to be at his best to keep out Maldonado close to half time. Aduriz did finally test Doblas at the other end with a header after the restart, but substitute Capi rounded things off after a quick passing move between Sobis and Edu late in the second half.
