Real Madrid moved up in to the top four with a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad, a welcome result after their Champions League defeat at Lyon midweek. However it took them some time to get going, the only real chances in the first half being a couple of efforts from Van Nistelrooy and Reyes, and there were some whistles from the crowd as the players left the field at the interval.

The second half started in the same vein, and there was applause when Capello pulled off Emerson to bring on Robinho. The Brazilian winger fired a shot just wide of the mark soon after coming on, and there was relief from the fans soon afterwards when Reyes (in the absence of Beckham and Roberto Carlos) curled a free kick into the top corner of the net.

The visitors had not been able to break through the Italian coach's spiders web though, and things got worse for them when Aranburu was sent off for a trip from behind on Sergio Ramos. Van Nistelrooy brought a couple of saves out of Riesgo, but with the game already in injury time Madrid cleared a corner from their own half, and substitute Beckham charged half the length of the pitch to stroke a shot past the keeper. The result leaves the Basque side down in the relegation zone.
